About Us
Local 5 WOI-DT, channel 5, is the ABC affiliated television station serving the Des Moines market. WOI and KCWI-TV (a CW affiliate), channel 23, share studios on Westown Parkway in West Des Moines.
Local 5 signed on the air on February 21, 1950. It was Iowa’s second television station, and the first in Des Moines. Local 5 was originally owned by Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa along with its noncommercial WOI radio stations, making it the first commercial television station in the United States to be owned by a major college. On March 1, 1994, WOI-TV was sold. It’s owners at the time, moved WOI-TV’s studios to a temporary location in Des Moines later that year. In 1998 WOI-TV moved to its current studios, on Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, Iowa.
On January 5, 2015, WOI re-launched as Local 5, and is now recognized as Local 5 We Are Iowa. A variety of changes were made to the station including, re-launching its morning news as Good Morning Iowa, and has a larger emphasis on political coverage and how stories matter to viewers as part of its overall local coverage.
On January 7, 2019, KCWI re-launched as CW Iowa 23. A variety of changes were made to the morning show including, re-launching its morning variety show as Iowa Live, and has a larger emphasis on local coverage and community events happening in Central Iowa.

We are honest. We do not mislead sources, story subjects or the public.
We attribute information received from others, and we are transparent with sourcing. We do not plagiarize.
We do not misstate our identity or intentions. We keep our word.
We do not intentionally slant the news.
We value being right over being fast.
UNNAMED SOURCES
We will use unnamed sources as the sole basis for reporting only as a last resort when it best serves the public’s right to know, and only with prior news management approval.
CORRECTIONS
We will make corrections promptly and proportionate to the original reporting.
