Local 5 takes home two 2022 Upper Midwest Regional Emmy Awards

Saturday, Local 5 news received 2 Upper Midwest Regional Emmy Awards, one for a weather special and another for a feature about a boy's efforts to help his dad.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Local 5 received two awards at the 23rd Upper Midwest Regional Emmys on Saturday, Oct. 15. 

"Good Morning Iowa" anchor Chenue Her and Chief Photographer Don Schmith were awarded a Regional Emmy in the Children/Youth/Teen — News category for their story "Never Too Young," the story of an Ames third grader writing a letter to the city to get an audible crosswalk for his father who is visually impaired.

The boy's letter got to the city at the perfect time, because they had the supplies and funding in hand to get an audio crosswalk put up at the busy intersection of South Dakota Avenue and Mortensen Road.

Local 5's weather team also took home an Upper Midwest Regional Emmy for Weather — Short or Long Form content with their documentary "Iowa's Forces of Nature."

The in-depth piece broke down Iowa's severe weather trends and allowed viewers to ask questions in real-time about the world around them.
