DES MOINES, Iowa — To mark that we are truly at the doorstep of another Iowa winter, the City of Des Moines announced Monday that Brenton Skating Plaza has officially opened for the season.
The ice rink, which was built in 2006 after a donation from the Brenton Foundation, is located at 520 Robert D. Ray Drive. The facility offers open-air skating from November until March along Principal Riverwalk.
Hours of operation:
- Monday - Thursday: 5 – 9 p.m.
- Friday: 5 – 11 p.m.
- Saturday: 12 – 11 p.m.
- Sunday: 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.

- Adult (13+) - $10
- Child (6–12) - $6
- Senior (60+) - $6
- Child (5 & Under) - Free
- Skate Rental - $5/pair
- Shoe Check (Optional) - $1/pair
- Punch Pass(10 Admissions + Skate Rentals) - $95
Special hours for holidays are as follows:
- Thanksgiving Day (11/28): Open 3:30 PM - 9:30 PM
- Black Friday (11/29): Open 11:00 AM - 11:00 PM
- Christmas Eve (12/24): Open 11 a.m. - 11:00 PM
- Christmas Day (12/25): Open 3:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
- New Year's Eve (12/31): Open 11a.m. - Midnight
- New Year's Day (1/1): Open 11 a.m. - 9 p.m.
- Dec. 23 - Dec. 31 (Not including above holidays): 11 a.m. - 11 p.m.
Special programming throughout the season
According to the city, special programing will be available throughout the season including free "Learn to Skate" sessions which begin Saturday, Dec. 7, 2024.
Registration for the lessons is available here, but the city warned that spots are limited.
Some reduced cost sessions will be available for:
