Local 5 Weekend Guide: Swing dancing, Iowa Wild games and more

Make the most of your "extra hour" this weekend with these events around the Des Moines metro.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Daylight saving time ends this weekend. Make the most of your "extra hour" by checking out all the Des Moines metro has to offer.

Whether you're in the mood to laugh, dance or cheer, here are five unique events happening this weekend to kick off November.

Mainframe First Friday

  • When: Friday, Nov. 1, 5-8 p.m.
  • Where: Mainframe Studios (900 Keosauqua Way, Des Moines)
  • Price: Free

It's a new month, which means its time for a visit to Mainframe Studios. This month, attendees can enjoy live music from Central Iowa Blues on each floor, explore and shop 180 artist studios and participate in an activity with artist Siricasso.

Halloween Swing Dance

  • When: Friday, Nov. 1, 7-10 p.m.
  • Where: Dance-a-Cross (1970 Grand Ave. #37, West Des Moines)
  • Price: $15 at the door, $12 in advance

Put on your favorite costume and get ready to dance! Heartland Swing will teach attendees the moves, all you have to do is groove to music from Junction Jazz Society. No partners are required! 

The Second City performances

  • When: Friday, Nov. 1, 7 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 2, 4 and 7 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 3, 1 p.m.
  • Where: Temple Theater (1011 Locust St., Des Moines)
  • Price: Tickets start at $20

With famous alumni including Stephen Colbert, Tina Fey, Catherine O'Hara and Keegan-Michael Key, it's no wonder The Second City has such staying power. This year, the improv troupe is celebrating its 65th anniversary. Head to Temple Theater for one of four shows this weekend to see audience-favorite songs, sketches and characters. 

Día de los Muertos party

  • When: Saturday, Nov. 2, 3-6 p.m.
  • Where: Union Park, by the shelter and splash pad (2009 Saylor Road, Des Moines)
  • Price: Free

Celebrate lost loved ones and the diversity in Des Moines at this Day of the Dead fall party. Hosted by the Capitol Park Neighborhood Association and sponsored by the Polk County Board of Supervisors, the celebration will feature dancers, a bouncy house, face painting and festive treats like hot chocolate and pan de Muertos. 

Iowa Wild games

  • When: Saturday, Nov. 2, 6 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 3, 3 p.m.
  • Where: Wells Fargo Arena
  • Price: Tickets start at $19

The Iowa Wild face the San Jose Barracuda in two games this weekend. On Saturday, enjoy a performance by Jager and the Polkameisters as part of the Coca-Cola Local Concert Series. Or, if you're attending Sunday, bring your dog for "Pucks 'N' Paws" night. Note: All fans bringing their dogs must fill out a waiver here.
