Make the most of a busy weekend in central Iowa with these five events.

DES MOINES, Iowa — From family-friendly festivals to colorful and cultural celebrations, there's something for everyone to do this weekend in central Iowa. 

Local 5 rounded up five events taking place in the Des Moines metro Friday through Sunday to help you make the most of a busy weekend.

Free fishing weekend

  • When: Friday, June 7, Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9
  • Where: Find a stocked lake or pond here
  • Price: Free

Got any plans this weekend? Go fish!  No, seriously: This weekend is free fishing weekend across Iowa, meaning you don't need a fishing license to reel in a great catch.

Find a pond or lake near you and grab your fishing poles for a fin-tastic family outing.

PrideFest

  • When: Friday, June 7, 5-11 p.m., Saturday, June 8, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and Sunday, June 9, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Where: Historic East Village, following Locust Street from E 6th Street to E 3rd Street 
  • Price: Free 

Show your true colors this weekend at Capital City PrideFest. This event will feature vendors, food and drink, drag performances, concerts and more, all honoring the LGBTQ+ community's pursuit of equality and acceptance. 

Don't forget to catch the Capital City Pride Parade at noon on Sunday: Local 5 staff members will be walking in the parade!

"The Play That Goes Wrong"

  • When: Friday, June 7 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, June 8 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, June 9 at 2 p.m.
  • Where: Des Moines Community Playhouse (831 42nd St., Des Moines)
  • Price: Tickets start at $29

While the play might "go wrong", seeing it this weekend is definitely the right choice. This play within a play follows the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society through their production of a 1920s murder mystery.

When "hilarious disaster" ensues, the cast is forced to get the play back on track before the final show. 

Raccoon River Palooza

  • When: Saturday, June 8, 8 a.m.-8 p.m.
  • Where: Raccoon River Park (2500 Grand Ave., West Des Moines)
  • Price: Free to attend

Enjoy "the best of the west" at this family-friendly summer festival celebrating the city of West Des Moines. Hosted by the city and West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce, the 4th annual Raccoon River Palooza will feature live music, a vendor fair, food trucks, cardboard boat races and more. 

Filipino Fiesta

  • When: Sunday, June 9, 9 a.m.-6:30 p.m.
  • Where: Wagner Park (410 W 1st St., Ankeny)
  • Price: Free 

Celebrate Filipino heritage and culture at this family-friendly event. The Filipino Fiesta hosted by the Filipino American Society of Iowa mirrors an annual event in the Philippines, Pista Sa Nayon, which celebrates the month the country declared independence.

Enjoy authentic Filipino food vendors, cultural performances, parlor games and even a colorful parade.
