Local 5 Weekend Guide: Things to do the weekend of Jan. 26-28

January is coming to a close, but there are still plenty of events to check out before the month is over.

DES MOINES, Iowa — January is coming to a close, but before the month is over, there's still plenty of ways to get out of the house and enjoy winter in Iowa. 

Local 5 rounded up five events taking place Friday, Jan. 26 through Sunday, Jan. 28 to help you say goodbye to the first month of 2024.

Benefit concert for Perry schools 

  • When: Friday, Jan. 26 at 5 p.m.
  • Where: Lefty's Live Music (2307 University Ave., Des Moines)
  • Price: $5 suggested donation

Support your central Iowa community and enjoy live music in one fell swoop this Friday. Lefty's Live Music will host an all-ages early show featuring Atraxis, Late Street and Safe Space. After 9 p.m., the 21+ show begins with artists like Banjo Cat, Luke S. Williams and more. Attendees are asked to bring their sweet tooth: Sugar Rush Factory will be at the venue with free cotton candy. All money raised from the event will go to the victims of the Perry school shooting.

"MAMMA MIA!" comes to Des Moines

  • When: Friday, Jan. 26 at 7:30 p.m. | Saturday, Jan. 27 at 2 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. | Sunday, Jan. 28 at 1 p.m. or 6:30 p.m.
  • Where: Des Moines Civic Center (221 Walnut St., Des Moines)
  • Price: Available tickets start at $86

"Mamma Mia, here I go again!" The Des Moines Civic Center welcomed the North American tour of "MAMMA MIA!" earlier this week, but there are still a few shows to catch this weekend. Enjoy ABBA's greatest hits including "Souper Trouper", "Lay All Your Love on Me" and "Dancing Queen", as told through this beloved jukebox musical. 

Iowa Bike Expo

  • When: Saturday, Jan. 27 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
  • Where: Iowa Events Center (730 3rd St., Des Moines)
  • Price: Free to attend

Whether you're an avid cyclist or just a casual rider, the Iowa Bike Expo is excited to welcome you to its 2024 event. This one-day bike show will help cyclists of all skill levels find new gear, learn new skills and connect with other cycling enthusiasts. At the event, you'll find vendors including independent bike shops, local breweries, trails and tourism associations, and of course, RAGBRAI. If you bike to the event, enjoy free indoor bike valet parking.

Cabin Fever Reliever 

  • When: Saturday, Jan. 27 from 5-7 p.m.
  • Where: Greenbelt Landing (1801 NW 114th St., Clive)
  • Price: Free to attend

Shake off the winter blues and get outside this weekend by attending Clive's 3rd Annual Cabin Fever Reliever. This free event will feature professional ice sculpting, ice fishing demonstrations, campfire rings with smores, free hot chocolate and more. Two food trucks will also be on site. Bring the whole family for an evening of winter fun. 

Jigsaw Puzzle Swap

  • When: Sunday, Jan. 28 from 12-5 p.m.
  • Where: Confluence Brewing Company (1235 Thomas Beck Rd., Des Moines)
  • Price: Free to attend if you bring a puzzle

Celebrate National Puzzle Day one day early with this puzzle swap hosted by The Rook Room. The rules are simple: Bring your gently-used puzzles to the event and trade them in for tickets. Then, use your tickets to select a new-to-you puzzle from the selection. If you don't have a puzzle to swap, don't worry: You can also buy tickets for $5.
