Mainframe First Friday

  • When: Friday, Aug. 2, 5-8 p.m.
  • Where: Mainframe Studios (900 Keosauqua Way, Des Moines)
  • Price: Free

A new month means another First Friday event at Mainframe Studios. This month's theme is "Photography: Virtual Storytelling." The event will feature work by 16 Mainframe photographers, as well as a filmmaker, spread out through the gallery.

Be on the look out for some fun activities this month, too: The first 140 people to receive a free polaroid at the event can participate in an interactive activity with portrait instructor Jon Lemons Photography. In addition, Sarah Rose Studio will offer a Polaroid Photobooth in her studio on the third floor.

Tax-Free Weekend

  • When: Friday, Aug. 2 and Saturday, Aug. 3
  • Where: Stores across the state
  • Price: Varies

Get ready for back-to-school season by buying some new clothes this tax-free weekend. No sales tax will be collected on any clothing or footwear purchased this Saturday and Sunday, as long as the item is less than $100.

Stores across the state are participating, but we recommend stopping by shopping hubs including the Jordan Creek Mall, Merle Hay Mall, Valley Junction, the East Village or the Outlets of Des Moines in Altoona.

Families are invited to bring their picnic blankets or folding chairs and look to the sky for a magical show each night.
