First Friday: 5 Floors of Fashion

  • When: Friday, Sept. 6, 5-8 p.m.
  • Where: Mainframe Studios (900 Keosauqua Way, Des Moines)
  • Price: Free

Explore five floors of fashion this Friday at Mainframe Studios. This month's open house will feature fashion, fiber arts, jewelry and makeup from more than 20 featured artists. In addition, the event will feature a henna artist, interactive displays, craft activities and a fashion show from 7-8 p.m.

"We are introducing Des Moines to the next generation of fashion designers as well as some established vets," said Nekia Whitfield, a spokesperson for Mainframe Studios. 

'It's Only a Play'

  • When: Friday, Sept. 6 and Saturday, Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 8 at 2 p.m.
  • Where: Tallgrass Theatre Company (2019 Grand Ave., Suite 100, West Des Moines)
  • Price: $33

Catch this play within a play this weekend at the Tallgrass Theatre Company. The plot centers around a group of Broadway producers, actors and friends as they anxiously await the opening night reviews of their show. But hey... "It's Only a Play", right?

Touchdown Tailgate

  • When: Saturday, Sept. 7, 11 a.m.-9 p.m.
  • Where: Cowles Commons 
  • Price: Free admission

If you can't make it out to Iowa City for the big game this weekend, that's okay: There are plenty of fans with plans to celebrate right here at home. Watch the Cyclones and Hawkeyes face off on two Jumbotron TVs and grab a bite to eat from local food trucks. Make sure to cheer loudly to show your team spirit!

Gamer Jazz concert

  • When: Saturday, Sept. 7, 2-3 p.m.
  • Where: Jamie Hurd Amphitheater (4100 Mills Civic Parkway, West Des Moines)
  • Price: Free

The Des Moines Gamer Symphony Orchestra gets jazzy with it at this free concert. Listen to songs from some of the most legendary video games, including Super Mario Brothers, Street Fighter, Plants vs. Zombies and more. The orchestra, led by conductor Sam Anderson, are sure to bring you the best tunes from all generations of games. 

Vintage in the Valley

  • When: Sunday, Sept. 8, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Where: Historic Valley Junction (100-200 blocks of 5th Street, West Des Moines)
  • Price: Free to attend

Close out the weekend with a one-of-a-kind shopping spree. For the second time this year, 75 vintage and handmade vendors will take over 5th Street, selling unique and quirky finds.
