Local 5 Weekend Guide: Things to do the weekend of Jan. 19-21

From basketball games to board game events, there's something for everyone this weekend in the Des Moines metro.

DES MOINES, Iowa โ€” If you're coming out of your house for the first time after our latest snowstorms, you might be on the hunt for some activities to look forward to.

Local 5 rounded up five events taking place Friday, Jan. 19 through Sunday, Jan. 21 to help you make the most of another January weekend.

Elton John and Billy Joel tribute concert

Friday, Jan. 19 at 8:30 p.m. | Wooly's (504 E Locust St., Des Moines) | Tickets start at $20

From "Rocketman" to "Piano Man", enjoy this tribute concert to two of the most influential artists of our time. While you might not be able to see Elton John and Billy Joel live on the same stage, you can experience this three-hour spectacle featuring all of their greatest hits from across the decades.

With Andy Anderson as Elton John and Tony Bohnenkamp as Billy Joel, this performance promises to bring these two legends to life right here in Des Moines.

Drake basketball games: "DSM Hometown Weekend"

Friday, Jan. 19 at 6 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 20 at 5 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m. | Knapp Center (2601 Forest Ave., Des Moines) | Tickets for the women's games start at $6, men's games start at $14

The Bulldogs will play three games this weekend, giving fans plenty of opportunities to catch them at the Knapp Center. The Drake women's team will face Belmont and Murray State on Jan. 19 and Jan. 21 respectively.

Meanwhile, the men's team will play Evansville on Jan. 20. Whichever game you go to, make sure to cheer loudly for Des Moines' Hometown Team. 

Iowa's Big Indoor Garage Sale

Saturday, Jan. 20, 9 a.m.-7 p.m. | Horizon Events Center (2100 NW 100th St., Clive) | $5 to enter or free with non-perishable food item donation

You don't have to wait for summer to hit up a garage sale. Visit Horizon Events Center this Saturday to find a multitude of vendors selling all kinds of goodies. The best part: you can get in for free if you donate a non-perishable food item, and all donations will go to the Iowa Food Bank.

After Dark Foam "Paw-ty"

Saturday, Jan. 20 at 5 p.m. | Paws & Pints (6218 Willowmere Dr., Des Moines) | $10 for a single-day pass if attending with a dog

Grab your furry friend for "a night of tail-wagging fun" at Paws & Pints. Dog owners are invited to dress their pups in glow-in-the-dark collars and other gear, then watch as they enjoy playing in bubbles courtesy of Five One Foam.

Owners can get on the fun by enjoying music, drinks and conversation with fellow dog lovers.

Board Game Day

Sunday, Jan. 21, 2-6 p.m. | Peace Tree Brewery (317 E Court Ave., Des Moines) | Free to attend

Escape the cold and come hang out at Peace Tree Brewery to play some board games. The Dealt Hand, a business that pop-up board game events across the metro, will provide a large selection of games for the whole family to enjoy.

Take a look at their collection here. If you can't make it this weekend, don't worry: they host the event at Peace Tree every other Sunday.
