30 jars of Peanut Butter! How much your Combat Hunger donation can buy for Iowa families in need

Combat Hunger is a decades old event, encouraging Iowans to donate money or food to help feed people living in poverty

Every year, radio station Star 102.5 and the Food Bank of Iowa partner up for the Combat Hunger Campaign, a 12 hour long radio broadcast. Their mission is simple: provide meals for our neighbors facing food insecurity.

"1 in 7 working Iowa families aren't making enough to cover their basic needs," explains Michelle Book. "This money will go to help us buy much needed nutritional supplies for our pantry partners."

Here's what your donation can provide for Iowa families in need.

  • $2 will feed an Iowan for a day
  • $25 will buy 45lbs of chicken drumsticks
  • $50 will buy 30 jars of peanut butter
  • $75 will buy 160 cans of tuna
  • $100 will buy 120 cans of sliced peaches
  • $250 will buy 110 half-gallon jugs of milk
  • $500 will buy ONE TON (2,000 pounds) of potatoes.

Jimmy Wright, a radio host with Star 102.5, has been involved with Combat Hunger from the start.

"The nice thing is that your donations stay right here. Iowans helping Iowans," says Wright.

The Combat Hunger runs from 6am-6pm tomorrow, Friday, November 17th, at American Equity Life Insurance on Westown Parkway. Star 102.5 radio hosts, including Jimmy himself, will be on site throughout the event.

So far, Combat Hunger has raised just over $5,000,  a tenth of their overall goal. You can click here to donate.
