Learning all about the Iowans who help make our state special! The Iowa History Journal introduces us to forgotten writer Ruth Suckow

Each issue contains of mix of informative and entertaining content from Iowa sports to historical events

The Iowa History Journal has been bringing readers fascinating stories for 15 years. It's the only popular, statewide magazine devoted exclusively to Iowa's history and publishes 6 issues per year. With topics ranging from Iowa icons to popular events, sports and politics, there's something for everyone in each magazine!

The November and December issue features the story of James Harlan of Mount Pleasant. A powerful politician in the 19th century, Harlan was one of the founders of the Iowa Republican Party. He also staunchly opposed slavery and served as Abraham Lincoln's Secretary of the Interior after the Civil War. But Harlan isn't the only historical figure in this month's issue.

Quinn Early, retired NFL player and Hawkeyes football and track star, tells the story of Iowa's first ever black football player.

"It was pretty cool watching him play football back in the 80's... and he's written a story for Iowa History Journal," explains Iowa History Journal owner and publisher Michael Swanger.

The November and December issue also speaks to the legacy of Iowa's lost writer, Ruth Suckow, who wrote 9 novels and 40 short stories.

A one-year subscription to the Iowa History Journal costs $19.95. You can buy a copy of this month's magazine at your local Hy-Vee, Walmart, or Barnes and Noble. For updates about the latest issues, follow Iowa History Magazine on Facebook and Instagram.
