"This park is going to bring families together." Variety - The Children's Charity prepares to open a new, accessible playground | Paid Content

Young Variety board member Zach Sims is raising funds to install accessible swings in Iowa playgrounds | Paid Content

Variety believes that playgrounds should be thrilling for all children! The majority of playgrounds throughout Iowa do not offer adaptations for children with special needs. Providing a playground for children of all abilities to play together helps promote play, healthy physical activity and learning for all children. Outdoor play experiences provide the perfect opportunity to support inclusive play by creating awareness, breaking down barriers and fostering friendships.

The first Variety Star Playground was built in honor and memory of Ashley Okland, who was a Young Variety board member. The playground at Ewing Park was the perfect way to honor Ashley because she wanted and believed all kids, no matter their abilities, should have the opportunity to play together.

Since 2014, Variety has provided two more Variety Star Playgrounds, one in Cedar Rapids and Noelridge Park and another in Des Moines at Riverview Park. Variety will break ground on the newest Ashley Okland Variety Star Playground at the Clive Greenbelt this spring.

Young Variety of Iowa board member Zach Sims is raising funds for a memorial swing for his brother, Ryan Sims. This swing is a two-way facing swing that will allow children with special needs to share a swing with their family and friends at the Ashley Okland Variety Star Playground at the Clive Greenbelt.
