Des Moines Public Library to resume normal hours at all locations starting March 29

Of course, the pandemic is still happening, so patrons will be required to wear a mask and practice social distancing in all of their branches.

DES MOINES, Iowa — As the vaccination rolls out, more and more businesses are catching glimpses of normalcy.

The Des Moines Public Library, for example, will be resuming normal hours at each of their locations starting on Monday.

It's a happy time for the library, but there's still a pandemic going on, so patrons must make sure to keep up those mitigation tactics to stop the spread of COVID-19.

"We take safety very seriously," said Sue Woody, director of DMPL. "And so we will be requiring everyone to wear their masks when they come into the library. And if you don't have one, we'll have one for you."

The mask requirement is for those older than two years old. Social distancing will also be required while roaming the shelves of the library.

The library will also have capacity limits at each of its six locations.

DMPL's East Side, Forest Avenue, Franklin Avenue, North Side and South Side libraries will open at 10 a.m. Monday through Saturday. The Central Library will open at 9 a.m. Monday through Friday and at 10 a.m. on Saturdays.

Here are some other things to note while at the library:

  • Private study rooms can be reserved for 1 hour, 45-minute sessions.
  • Tables and chairs will be available for 30-minute periods for WiFi usage, studying, etc.
  • Curbside pickup will continue from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Saturday at East Side, Forest Avenue, North Side, and South Side Libraries, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday at Franklin Avenue Library. The Central Library pickup window will be available full-time.
  • Library programming will remain virtual for the time being.
