Meet Charlie: Ankeny Police Department welcomes new K-9

Ankeny police say they were able to add Charlie to the force thanks to "the generous support of an anonymous donor."

ANKENY, Iowa — Ankeny police are welcoming a new furry friend to the force.

K-9 Charlie is a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois who joined the department in June, according to a press release.

In recent months, Charlie and his handler, Ofc. Colton Campbell, have completed "rigorous training" in narcotics detection, tracking and apprehension, which will comprise much of Charlie's daily responsibilities.

Ankeny police say they were able to add Charlie to the force thanks to "the generous support of an anonymous donor."

"The specialized skills Charlie brings will undoubtedly strengthen our efforts in maintaining a safe and secure environment for the residents of Ankeny," said Chief Darius Potts in a press release.
