DES MOINES, Iowa — The Blank Park Zoo said goodbye to the oldest otter it had in captivity Thursday following a decline in her health, according to the zoo's announcement Friday afternoon.
Sassy, who had turned 19 years old in January, was said to be under the watchful eyes of zoo staff as she long outlived the 12.3-year life expectancy for river otters.
According to the zoo, she was reportedly one of the oldest recorded North American river otters in AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) accredited facilities.
"Sassy has touched the lives of millions in her time with us," Blank Park Zoo said in a Facebook post. "From interacting with guests at the viewing window, showing off river otters impressively sleek, powerful agility, to her signature naps in the sunshine, Sassy inspired people of all ages. As a species native to Iowa, her impact stretches far beyond the Zoo to our own backyards."
Otters are a keystone species in the Midwest, the zoo said in the post. The zoo reaffirmed its commitment to educating about the animals while inspiring visitors.
Access to care appropriate for an animal's stage in life is something the zoo says it is dedicated to offering every animal, including in the later stages of life.
In closing, Blank Park Zoo gave special thanks to Sassy's care team for their exceptional care of the otter.
"She will be dearly missed," the zoo said.
