IOWA, USA — Around 60 animals were found in "horrible conditions" in a home in Norwalk this week, the Animal Rescue League of Iowa shared on Facebook Wednesday.
Law enforcement alerted ARL to the situation, leading to the discovery of dozens of sick, mistreated animals. According to the ARL, 57 dogs — some puppies — and three cats were trapped inside the home. There were also dead animals on the premises.
"Our team removed each of the animals one by one until all had been rescued, returning to the shelter with the last load late into the evening," the organization's Facebook post reads. "Back at the shelter, our Miracle Medical Team was waiting. With so many animals arriving in such poor condition, we needed all hands on deck. Some medical staff who had finished their shifts for the day returned just to help these dogs."
Skin problems, cloudy eyes, hair loss and injured legs are just some of the afflictions ARL noted in the rescue group. The animals are all receiving care now, with some requiring antibiotics and some needing surgery.
ARL is asking for donations to help cover the medical costs of the recovered animals. As of 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, more than $1,700 had been raised for the cause.
