PERRY, Iowa — A Perry family is celebrating the "hoppy" arrival of their Leap Year baby in style.
John and Martha Stetzel of Perry welcomed their daughter at 7:40 a.m. on Feb. 29 at Methodist West, making her a "leapling".
UnityPoint Health shared a photo of the newborn wearing a shirt that reads "I'm leaping into life" and a hand-knitted frog hat from a group of knitters called the Fibersmiths of Des Moines.
She joins around five million people worldwide who were born on Leap Day throughout the decades, roughly .06% of the world's total population.
For babies born on Leap Day, paperwork can be a touchy subject. Some governments require parents to choose Feb. 28 or March 1 as their child's birthday on legal documents like driver's licenses.
Luckily for the Stezels' unnamed daughter, technology is helping more and more people keep their original birthdate.
