Black Cat Ice Cream to open new storefront in Valley Junction

The new storefront will open on Sept. 1 at 134 5th Street.

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — A local ice cream shop is feline good after announcing a new location Wednesday.

Black Cat Ice Cream plans to open a second storefront in Valley Junction. Currently, Black Cat operates a single location in the Drake neighborhood.

"[Valley Junction is] a great business community," said owner Alex Carter. "It's a great local community there. I feel like we'd be a really good fit in that kind of space, so I'm really excited to be a part of all that."

Staff say they're looking forward to what the new storefront will bring and it's ability to capture what makes Black Cat Ice Cream special.

"I love that Main Street there, and it just still has so much charm and historic value that I think really makes Black Cat special," said front-of-house manager Abby Bankes.

The Valley Junction storefront will have a bigger kitchen and seating area than the Drake location. The owners say they hope to start catering once the new store opens.

"In the future, it'll just be more: more ice cream, more of our creative offerings and and more space to do it," Carter said.

The Valley Junction location will open on Sept. 1 at 134 5th Street.
