DES MOINES, Iowa — Working to create change for the good of central Iowa, Local 5 put together 100 holiday baskets with meals for Des Moines families. Des Moines Public Schools (DMPS) chose the recipients, who received a quarter ham and a basket of side dishes, including ingredients for mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and dressing.
Local 5 and Fareway Stores prepared the baskets Monday at the Kurtz Opportunity Center for delivery by DMPS Monday and Tuesday. Meals were provided to families of The Focus Program and Mitchell Preschool. This is the third year Local 5 has organized the holiday meal giveaway. Holiday hams were generously provided by Berkwood Farms, a value of $2,200, and Fareway Stores provided the side dishes included in the meals, valued at of over $1,700.
“Local 5 is honored to be able to give back to our community,” said David Loving, Local 5 & CW Iowa 23 president and general manager. “Food insecurity is at record levels in Iowa this year and an overwhelming number of those in need are children. Thanks to great partners like Fareway Stores and Berkwood Farms, we can be part of the solution to help solve this important issue.”
