Des Moines Christian football manager leads by example through attitude and effort

Des Moines Christian football manager Drew Gaiser is proving that you don't have to be in the lineup to help the team succeed.

URBANDALE, Iowa — For the Des Moines Christian football team, it's all about upholding a high standard in everything they do.

That applies to everyone from the coaches to the team's managers. Sophomore manger Drew Gaiser is a glowing example of that.

Within the Lions' huddle, you'll find him with water bottles in hand, never missing a beat.

"He's the fastest guy around," said sophomore right guard Bo Carlson. "All the time, flying around getting everybody what they need."

Whether that's offering water or giving some words of encouragement to players on the sideline, Drew's always up for the task.

"His attitude is unparalleled," said sophomore quarterback and linebacker Andrew Clement. "He'll come out here with a smile on his face every day ready to go, ready to help the team in any way he can."

Drew was born with cerebral palsy, but it doesn't stop him from doing his job to the best of his ability to help the team.

"I try to have a positive attitude about it because I know this is what's happened to me and I can't change it," said Drew. "It just motivated me to work hard every day to help them."

Since becoming a manger back in middle school, it's allowed him to still be involved in sports even though he can't play.

"It helps me feel like I'm part of the team," said Drew. "It helps me feel like I'm more involved in the school and just makes me feel much better about myself."

Drew's effort and positive attitude reflect what the team's culture is all about.

"He really enjoys being out here and you know, contributing in the ways that he can to be a part of DMC football," said head football coach Matt Daniels. "We're just really grateful for his effort and his energy that he brings every day."

"He's a 100 percent effort guy," said Cooper Handsaker. "He doesn't know how to give anything less than that. So that's just a big inspiration for us."

Instead of dwelling on what he can't do, Drew has found a way to make a positive impact, and he wants others to know that they can too.

"You don't have to play a sport just so you can have a spot on the team," said Drew. "Anything you can do to help out. It's more than just playing."

In addition to being a manager for the football team, Drew is also a manager for the baseball team where he helps keep stats.
