MARION COUNTY, Iowa — On Tuesday evening, the Iowa Bird Rehabilitation received a special delivery from the Marion County Sheriff's office.

Sheriff Jason Sandholdt called the rehabilitation center around 5 p.m. to notify them of a downed bald eagle in Marion County.

According to a Facebook post, the eagle was spotted approximately 50 yards off the road shortly after it started to get dark outside.

The post adds that Sandholdt said he would go back to the eagle after a meeting as it would take an Iowa Bird Rehabilitation volunteer an hour to get to the animal. By the time Sandholdt returned, Iowa Bird Rehabilitation says the bird hadn't moved far from its location, and the sheriff retrieved her and met a volunteer in Prairie City.

The bald eagle was delivered to Iowa Bird Rehabilitation around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. During an initial exam, the organization found nothing obvious so they gave her fluids and let her rest overnight.

The eagle was transferred to Saving Our Avian Resources (SOAR) Wednesday for "full evaluation and care."

"Thank you Sheriff Sandholdt and IBR volunteer Cynthia for saving this gorgeous eagle," the post says.
