Veterans Day 2023: Deals, discounts and freebies in central Iowa

From storewide discounts to free meals, there are plenty of ways for veterans and active duty service members to save money in central Iowa this Veterans Day.

IOWA, USA — Saturday, Nov. 11 is Veterans Day, an opportunity to celebrate U.S. service members past and present. 

From storewide discounts to free meals, there are plenty of ways for veterans and active duty service members to save money in central Iowa this Veterans Day.

Applebee's

All active duty military, veterans, reserves and National Guard can get a free in-restaurant full-size entrée from the following choices: 

  • Classic Bacon Cheeseburger
  • 6 oz. Top Sirloin
  • Chicken Tenders Platter
  • Double Crunch Shrimp
  • Fiesta Lime Chicken
  • Oriental Chicken Salad
  • Three-Cheese Chicken Penne

Veterans will also get a $5 bounce-back card to redeem for dine-in, to-go or delivery within a three-week redemption window.

Caribou Coffee

Veterans, active military members and their spouses are able to get a free small hot brewed coffee or cold press on Veterans Day with a valid military ID. 

Casey's

Veterans can treat themselves to a complimentary fountain drink or coffee at their local Casey's store on Veterans Day with military ID or proof of service. 

Chili's

All veterans and active military members can get a free meal for dine-in from the following menu:

  • Old Timer with Cheese
  • Chicken Bacon Ranch Quesadillas
  • Three-Piece Crispers with fries
  • Chili or Soup with a side salad

Veterans must present a valid military ID to redeem the offer. 

Des Moines Botanical Garden

Veterans will receive free admission all day on Saturday, Nov. 11. The garden will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Denny's

On Friday, Nov. 10, all active, non-active and retired military personnel can get a Grand Slam for free from 5 a.m. to noon when dining in with a valid military ID or DD 214.

Dunkin'

Each year, all retired and active military members can get a free donut of their choice at any participating Dunkin’ restaurants nationwide on Veterans Day. 

Dollar General

Verified active military members and veterans can receive a 20% discount from Nov. 9 through Nov. 12 on qualifying in-store purchases. 

Dollar General also offers an ongoing 11% discount to military personnel and their families on the second Wednesday of each month. 

Fareway

Fareway will apply a 15% discount to all veterans, active-duty military and reserve and guard members on Veterans Day. Shoppers are asked to identify their branch of service at checkout. 

Golden Corral

Those who served in the military can get a free dinner at participating Golden Corral Buffet locations during Military Appreciation Night on Monday, Nov. 13, from 5 p.m. – close.

Great Clips

All veterans and active service members can get a free haircut or a free haircut card for use between Nov. 12 and Dec. 1, 2023. 

Non-military customers can also receive a free haircut card to give to a military member, if they want to pay it forward.

Hy-Vee

All veterans and active-duty military members can receive a free buffet-style breakfast on Friday, Nov. 10 from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Hy-Vee stores. 

In addition, they can receive 15% off grocery purchases on Friday, Nov. 10, online and in-store. Use code "VETS2023" for Hy-Vee Aisles Online purchases. 

IHOP

Veterans and active duty military can get a free stack of Red, White and Blueberry Pancakes from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. with military ID or proof of service.

Kohl's

Active and former military personnel, veterans and their immediate families will get 30% off in stores Veterans Day weekend — Friday, Nov. 10 through Sunday, Nov, 12 — with a valid military ID.

Kohl's also offers 15% off in stores every Monday all year long for active and former military personnel, veterans and their immediate families.

Krispy Kreme

Veterans and active military members can visit any participating Krispy Kreme store in the U.S. for a free doughnut and a free small coffee on Saturday, Nov. 11. 

Little Caesars

Veterans and active military members can get a free lunch combo, which features four slices of Little Caesars' Detroit-style pepperoni deep dish pizza and a 20 oz. Pepsi product, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Veterans Day. 

Lowes

On Veterans Day, Lowes stores are giving collectible pins to the first 150 veterans who shop in store. 

In addition, active, reserve, honorably discharged, retired military personnel and their immediate family members who are signed up for the store's discount program can receive a 10% discount on in-store purchases everyday.

Red Robin

Veterans and active duty members can get a free Red's Tavern Double, which comes with free refills on Bottomless Steak Fries.

Sport Clips

Many Sport Clips locations are offering free haircuts to service members and veterans with valid military identification. Call your local store to check if it's participating. 

Also, Sport Clip locations will donate an additional $2 per haircare service Friday to support "Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarships" for service members and veterans.

Starbucks

Starbucks will offer a free tall hot or cold brewed coffee for veterans, military service members and military spouses at participating U.S. Starbucks stores on Veterans Day. 

Starbucks also plans to donate $100,000 each to Team Red, White & Blue and Travis Manion Foundation. 

Walgreens

Veterans, military and their families signed up for myWalgreens can receive 20% off eligible regular-price items Nov. 10-13. 

Wendy's
