DES MOINES, Iowa — You could feel the joy of the holiday as people were lining the block near Platinum Kutz waiting for a chance to snag a free Thanksgiving meal.
Des Moines resident Augustine Kargbo was one of many who benefited from Representative-elect Rob Johnson's Turkey Giveaway initiative. Folks could grab a cooked or frozen turkey and sides, no money necessary.
Johnson said giving the meals out for free is imperative during the seasons when people struggle the most.
"That $40 you would have spent on a turkey, you can put that towards something else. You can put it on a light bill. You can put it towards gas. You can put it towards something else," Johnson said.
Johnson wasn't alone in Wednesday's efforts. The owner of Platinum Kutz, Robert Presswod, played a crucial role in organizing and hosting the event. Presswood celebrates his birthday on Thanksgiving and uses this opportunity to give back to the people who help his business thrive.
"Instead of giving away uncooked turkeys, we're gonna cook it for you, for those who didn't have the proper tools to or some people don't even got a big enough stove for some turkeys," Presswood said.
Luckily Augustine and many others were able to score a turkey. With a full heart and hands, Augustine is grateful for the barber shop and Rob Johnson's help.
"He cares about people not in the community, like me, you know, he's also cared for us. you know what? I mean, it's not just here to take my money," Kargbo said.
