ANKENY, Iowa — Carl Moyer, the founder and owner of Karl Chevrolet, passed away over the weekend, the company announced.
"He was a visionary in the car business, he gave back to the community exponentially and it was always at the forefront of his marketing strategy," the company wrote on Facebook. "Carl has been a mentor to many, and friend to most, a father, brother, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather but most importantly a husband to the love of his life Penny."
The namesake Karl Chevrolet dealership started in Ankeny in 1978 before moving to its current location, still in Ankeny but off the interstate, in 1983.
In addition to the main sales lot, Moyer began the Dirt Truck Racing Association and Karl Chevrolet Dirt Truck Series.
The company said they have 10 locations and "over 800 employees" in the state.
