Police investigating 2nd car crash into Des Moines coffee shop

Both cars that crashed into the front of Northern Vessel were stolen vehicles. However, police say there is currently no indication the two crashes are connected.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Northern Vessel is back open after a second car crashed right into the front of its store, nine months after the exact same crash occurred.

Police are currently investigating the second car crash, since crashes like these aren't common in this area.

Both cars that crashed into the front were stolen vehicles. However, police say there is currently no indication the two crashes are connected.

While the coffee shop has faced adversity the past year, owners say it is stronger than ever.

"There's that initial shock of, 'Is this really happening again for a second time?'" said TJ Rude, founder of Northern Vessel. "When I pulled onto the scene, you do have that moment where your heart drops a little bit."

Police believe the second car accident could have been intentional, but the investigation is ongoing.

Rude says he feels like their momentum they had recovering from the first crash was stopped when the second crash happened.

"The first time was just confusion mixed with gratitude, this time we were just kind of mad," Rude said.

However, the popular coffee shop is determined to keep moving forward.

"The switch got flipped immediately and it was just back to work," Rude said. "Let's get things cleaned up and let's reopen as soon as possible."

Rude adds that the second time had a much quicker bounce back emotionally for his staff.

"No matter what happens, no matter what gets thrown our way, we're gonna press on, and I think that's an invaluable lesson," Rude said.

While the storefront is back open, you can catch Northern Vessel around town at the Downtown Des Moines Farmers' Market, Iowa Cubs games and Lifetime Fitness in Urbandale.
