DES MOINES, Iowa — What does it take to grow a business during the pandemic? A brother-sister duo from Cedar Rapids says it's about persistence and having support from the community.
Almost Famous Popcorn Company is based in Cedar Rapids. It started at the NewBo City Market after the floods of 2008.
The founders were a 10 and 13-year-old brother and sister.
Fast forward a decade later, and they are opening a store in Des Moines' East Village.
"We had signed a lease just before the pandemic hit, and at that point we kind of saw two options," said co-owner Sydney Reickhoff. "We could try to get out of this lease ... I think that would've probably been possible but there was something in us that just said 'You know, just because there's a pandemic and there's all these negative things going on we want to bring a little bit of joy.'"
From lemon cookie to monster cookie, Almost Famous offers dozens of popcorn and ice cream flavors.
