DES MOINES, Iowa — Friday marked DreiBerge Coffee's last day in its East Village store.
The coffee shop is known for uniquely-shaped, plastic-free cups. The downtown Des Moines coffee shop was only open for 18 months.
"I cannot explain all the emotions that are wrapped into this decision - there are probably some I haven't even identified yet," DreiBerge posted on Facebook Wednesday night. "This is so hard and sad, but we know this is the next right thing we need to do."
The post thanked DreiBerge's customers for their support and for "becoming family."
DreiBerge will continue making coffee. Customers can buy it on their website or through local partners such as Clyde's Fine Diner, RC's Diner and Dinner Dispatch.
"It's heartbreaking," Andrea Cummings, the shop's owner, said. "We love oru community, but we don't have the capacity to keep staying open when we don't make enough money to pay our bills.
Community members came out to visit the store for the last time Friday, buying drinks or coffee beans.
Cummings' message to Iowans: support local.
"I know many of the small business owners here in the East Village have all struggled and been challenged in the past year with COVID," she said. "ANd especially because we're in a business district. So go out and support small business. The money you invest in us, we invest back into our community, and it's good for everyone."
