4,662 initial unemployment claims were filed last week in Iowa, an increase of 470 (11.21%) from the previous week.
The number of Americans seeking unemployment benefits fell last week to 787,000, a sign that job losses may have eased slightly but are still running at historically high levels.
4,019 initial claims for the week of Oct. 11-17 were by people who work and live in Iowa, while 643 by individuals who work in Iowa but live outside the state.
$11,843,704.65 in unemployment insurance benefits were paid out last week, a decrease of $1,095,274.65 (9.57%) from the previous week.
Continuing claims for the week were 41,967, a decrease of 4,442 (9.66%) from the previous week.

Additional data released for last week:
- $2,403,000 in Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) benefits paid, which were retroactive payments as the program ended July 25, 2020. Since April 4, 2020, a total of $1,616,289,343 in FPUC benefits have been paid.
- $3,814,182 paid in Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) benefits. Since April 13, 2020, a total of $132,425,732.89 in PUA benefits have been paid.
- $7,805,035.96 in Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) benefits paid. Since May 27, 2020, a total of $100,909,712.39 in PEUC benefits have been paid.
- $1,423,314.72 in benefits paid in State Extended Benefits, 2020. Since July 21, 2020, a total of $12,640,626.88 in Extended Benefits have been paid.
