Iowa unemployment update: Initial and continuing claims both drop, $18.3M paid out in benefits

$18,386,679.39 in unemployment insurance benefits were paid out last week.

4,962 initial unemployment claims were filed last week in Iowa, a decrease of 290 (5.52%) from the previous week.

The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits fell last week to 860,000, a historically high figure that reflects economic damage from the coronavirus outbreak.

4,462 initial claims for the week of Sept. 6-12 were by people who work and live in Iowa, while 500 by individuals who work in Iowa but live outside the state.

$18,386,679.39 in unemployment insurance benefits were paid out last week.

Continuing claims for the week were 65,653, a decrease of 5,300 (7.47%) from the previous week.

The following industries had the most claims, according to IWD:

  • Construction (1,174)
  • Manufacturing (890)
  • Industry Not Available - Self-employed, Independent Contractors, etc (531)
  • Health Care & Social Assistance (415)
  • Accommodation & Food Services (332)

Additional data released for last week:

  • $2,787,600 in Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) benefits paid,which were retroactive payments as the program ended July 25, 2020. Since April 4, 2020, $1,600,401,343 in FPUC benefits has been paid.
  • $3,557,772 paid in Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) benefits 
  • $5,239,683.30 in Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) benefits paid. Since May 27, 2020, a total of $66,836,556.49 in PEUC benefits have been paid. 
  • $1,008,215.61 in benefits paid in State Extended Benefits. Since July 21, 2020, a total of $6,503,493.01 in Extended Benefits have been paid. 
  • $38,117,700 in benefits paid out in Lost Wages Assistance (LWA) benefits. Since Sept. 3, 2020, a total of $141,048,000 in LWA benefits have been paid.
