Iowa unemployment numbers: Nearly 11,000 initial claims filed; $31.9M paid out in benefits

There were 135,177 continuing claims in the state last week, down 8,311 from the previous week.

10,698 initial unemployment claims were filed last week in Iowa, an increase of 2,966 from the previous week, according to Iowa Workforce Development.

1.3 million Americans total filed for unemployment last week.

9,896 initial claims for the week of June 28-July 4 were by people who work and live in Iowa, while 802 were by individuals who work in Iowa but live outside the state.

$31,917,695.63 in unemployment insurance benefits were paid out for that week.

There were 135,177 continuing claims last week, down 8,311 from the previous week.

The following industries had the most claims, according to IWD:

  • Manufacturing (3,448)
  • Industry Not Available - Self-employed, Independent Contractors, etc. (1,670)
  • Health Care & Social Assistance (833)
  • Accommodation & Food Services (586)
  • Retail Trade (519)

Other data released for last week:

  • $83,076,000 in Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) benefits paid out. Since April 4, 2020, a total of $1,226,788,800 in FPUC benefits has been paid.
  • $4,433,528.82 paid out in Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) benefits.
  • $3,327,234 in benefits paid via Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC). Since May 27, 2020, a total of $25,197,874.39 in PEUC benefits have been paid.
