ANKENY – Police have arrested and charged an Ankeny High School teacher with sexual exploitation for an alleged relationship with a former student.
In June, Police found Amanda Dreier, 27, and a male together in a parked car near the Kirkendall Library in Ankeny while responding to an unrelated call. Upon questioning, officers discovered Dreier is a current English teacher at Ankeny Community Schools and the male was a recent graduate of Ankeny High School. The male was a recent student of Dreier’s.
A subsequent investigation by detectives reportedly determined that Dreier and the male were involved in an ongoing sexual relationship. According to authorities, the relationship is illegal in the State of Iowa because Dreier is a certified educator employed by the Ankeny School District and relationships are prohibited for a period of 30 days after graduation.
Dreier is charged with exploitation by a school employee – a class D felony in Iowa. Police are withholding the name of the male involved in the case because he is the victim of an alleged sexual crime.
Ankeny Schools released the following statement Friday afternoon:
“Student safety is of primary importance to Ankeny Community Schools. Our district staff members work hard to protect and educate students every day. In any allegation of misconduct we are shocked and disappointed when the highest standards of education have not been met and the good work of educating students is undermined.
The conduct alleged in this case is not tolerated in Ankeny Schools. The district thoroughly investigates any report that raises a concern about the conduct of a staff member, including any report of an inappropriate relationship.
Ms. Dreier resigned her position effective June 13, and the Ankeny School District is fully cooperating with police in their ongoing investigation. The district fulfilled its statutory requirements and notified the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners regarding this investigation.
We will continue to remain vigilant and protect students by taking appropriate action when concerns are raised.
As this is an ongoing criminal investigation, we will direct further inquiries about the specifics of this case to the Ankeny Police Department.”
