Clive Police Chief Michael Venema retiring after almost 40 years in law enforcement

"He has most definitely left the department in a better place than it was when he got here," the department shared on Facebook.

CLIVE, Iowa — Clive Police Chief Michael Venema is officially retiring after almost 40 years in law enforcement. His last day with the department will be July 31.

“It has been an honor to serve the Clive community alongside the department's dedicated and professional officers and staff," Venema said in a statement. "Working for the Clive community has been a rewarding experience these last 12 years."

Venema was appointed Clive Police Chief in 2012. In a Facebook post, Clive police recognized Venema for his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and through "periods of civil unrest."

"He has most definitely left the department in a better place than it was when he got here," the department shared. "Congratulations on a well-earned retirement, and good luck with your next chapter in life. Fair winds and following seas."

Venema began his law enforcement career in 1984 with the Sterling Police Department in Illinois, Clive police say. From there, Venema went on to spend 26 years with the Davenport Police Department, rising to the rank of Lieutenant.

Venema retires as only the third police chief in the history of the Clive Police Department. He will be succeeded by Clive Police Captain Mark Rehberg, who will be sworn in at Thursday's city council meeting.

“Chief Venema has done an exceptional job leading the department and fostering strong partnerships with the community,” said Clive Mayor John Edwards in a statement. “He has transformed the department and its mission of providing public safety, promoting community service, and enhancing the quality of life for Clive residents. I know Chief Rehberg is the right person to lead the department and continue Clive’s commitment to community service.”

The City of Clive will recognize Venema's service at a ceremony and reception on Friday from 3-5 p.m at the Clive Public Safety Center. The event is open to the public.
