Goodwill of Central Iowa launches soft skills training program

This new seven-week program hopes to give participants a better chance at a successful future.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Goodwill of Central Iowa is launching a new training program designed to empower individuals that are facing employment barriers.

The Job Ready Pathways Skills Training Program is a seven-week program focused on helping participants cultivate soft skills that are necessary in the workforce.

The program will be made up of three different learning series: job readiness, job seeking and job keeping. Participants will also develop skills such as professional communication, time management, teamwork and critical thinking.

By the end of the program, participants will have the tools needed to make a resume, apply for a job and participate in interviews.

"I know that the Job Ready Pathways Skills Training Program has the ability to give someone who may have not had a job, or has some challenges in life, a foundation to build on and the confidence they need to succeed," said Doug Snyder, a skills trainer for Goodwill of Central Iowa who will lead the program.

Snyder hopes the program can make a difference in the lives of the participants.

"Everyone deserves love, kindness, and respect and the opportunity to feel the power of employment," Snyder said. "This program can be the beginning of a new life for someone... I am excited and happy to be a part of that process."

Participants are eligible to take part of the program if they are:

  • 18 years old or older
  • Living with a physical or intellectual disability or mental health issue
  • Receiving funding from the Iowa Vocational Rehabilitation Services (IVRS)

"At Goodwill, we believe in building bridges. The Job Ready Pathways Skills Training Program is one of those bridges, offering tangible skills and real hope to those eager to engage fully with their communities through work," said Mary Hunter, president and CEO of Goodwill of Central Iowa.

The program is now accepting applications. For more information, visit www.dmgoodwill.org.
