DES MOINES, Iowa — Pride month is just around the corner, and two local organizations are working together to help Iowans share their pride.
Iowa Safe Schools is partnering with Project Rainbow Iowa to host a pride flag fundraiser, with the goal of staking pride flags at homes and businesses throughout central Iowa.
People and businesses can pay $15 to receive a flag. The organizations plan to stake the flags at participating homes and businesses in the coming weeks.
100% of the money raised from the flag fundraiser will benefit the LGBTQ+ community in Iowa, with funds going to Iowa Safe Schools and the Iowa Trans Mutual Aid Fund.
Both Iowa Safe Schools and Project Rainbow Iowa say flying a flag is a show of support that makes a difference.
"Students need our support more than ever," said Damian Thompson, director of external affairs for Iowa Safe Schools. "When they're driving to school or going to visit a friend's house seeing those visible pride flags, that visible allyship is so important."
"It means so much to see more support that exists out in the neighborhoods and we like to think that there is," said Nick Klinkefus, founder and president of Project Rainbow Iowa.
The organizations will begin staking flags over the next couple weeks ahead of Pride Month starting in June. Flags will be picked up in the weeks after Pride Month ends.
