From sledding to shoveling, central Iowa kids take in snow day

While some took the day to play with friends, others saw an opportunity to give back to their community.

IOWA, USA — When the first big batch of snow fell in central Iowa this week, kids couldn't wait to get outside.

Some grabbed their sleds and headed to the biggest hill they could find.

"We had no school today, because it got off. So I mean, we were just trying to have fun, no phones, you know," one Waukee High School student told Local 5.

Many schools were closed on Tuesday due to the heavy snowfall. After a warmer-than-usual December, kids were happy to see the first snowstorm come through.

Warrior Park in Waukee is one of the more popular spots for those eager sledders.

"We've been doing this for a few years and coming to this hill, but we didn't last year. So it was nice to come up here today, hang with friends," said Frankie, also a Waukee High School student.

While some kids took the day to play, others saw an opportunity to give back to their community.

When the Carlisle High School football team learned that school would be canceled Tuesday, they started reaching out to neighbors, offering to clear driveways and cars of snow.

"We thought it would be a good idea to come help people shovel who can't do it, or it's really difficult for them," said Mason Lucas, a member of the team.

Even in the off-season, the boys felt it was important to come together as a team and help those who needed it.

"This community has done a lot for us, so the least we can do is help them out," Lucas added. "Being with your friends and buddies doing it makes time pass by and makes it a lot more fun."

The team shoveled a total of 30 driveways, receiving many thanks from homeowners.

It's safe to say that no matter how old you get, you can always find a way to enjoy a snow day.
