City of Clive details plans to rebuild after fire at Stonegate Park

The park was deemed a total loss by city officials after an overnight fire last summer.

CLIVE, Iowa — It’s been about six months since the playground at Stonegate Park burned down in what police say was a possible arson case.

Although those responsible still haven't been caught, the city is moving forward, looking to rebuild.

The playground used to be full of things for kids to play on and to run around on but you can't tell from walking by now.

In mid-August of last year, Stonegate Park’s playground was engulfed in flames overnight.

Clive's Leisure Services Director Richard Brown remembers seeing the aftermath for the first time.

“There wasn’t a lot left. Sometimes with this playground equipment, once they catch fire, they melt almost completely to the ground and really there wasn’t a lot left other than some charred remains," he said.

According to Brown, it’s a total loss that will take about $300,000 to rebuild.

“It’s really frustrating and disappointing that it’s going to have to be replaced," he said.

Still, it’s an effort Brown says is well worth it.

“The neighborhood really relies on it. That’s why people live in the neighborhood surrounding this park. They like to have those amenities and the opportunities to get out and about and have fun," he said.

There are currently four different concept drawings of what the playground could look like in the future. Postcards have been sent out to locals nearby so they can pick their favorite one and give feedback. So far, there’s been over 350 comments.

“It’s a great opportunity for them to have feedback in the next generation of what Stonegate Park looks like," Brown said.

A completion date hasn’t yet been decided on however the hope is for the playground to be back to its former glory by mid-summer.
