Suspect dead following shooting that wounded 2 Waterloo police officers

One of the officers is expected to be released from the hospital on Monday.

WATERLOO, Iowa — Two Waterloo police officers were wounded and a suspect was killed in a shooting Sunday morning near a park in Waterloo.

Police responded to a report of a man with a gun riding a bike in a neighborhood near just before 8:30 a.m. near the 200 block of Manson Street.

Officers arrived to find 35-year-old Kelvin Lee Plain Jr. riding a bike nearby in Sullivan Park, according to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

Plain fled from officers on a bike before taking off on foot through the park. Law enforcement fired a taser at Plain, knocking him to the ground.

While he was down, Plain allegedly fired the gun at the officers, hitting one who was inside their vehicle and the other who was on foot.

The officers then shot at Plain, killing him, the DCI said.

The two wounded officers were taken to a local hospital and one is expected to be released from the hospital on Monday.
