Des Moines man convicted in 2022 Drake neighborhood shooting for 2nd time

Andrew Jerome Harris was originally convicted of first-degree murder in November 2023. In February, however, Harris was granted a new trial.

POLK COUNTY, Iowa — A Des Moines man was convicted for the 2022 shooting of Tyrell Lavell Grimes for a second time, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

A jury deliberated for four hours Wednesday before delivering Andrew Jerome Harris a new guilty verdict of second-degree murder.

Harris' sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 15. A second-degree murder conviction carries a prison sentence of 50 years.

Harris was originally convicted of first-degree murder in November 2023. In February, however, Harris was granted a new trial. At the time, the judge said the court had made a mistake by excluding a comment Harris said Grimes made to him before the shooting.

The shooting began with an argument outside Rico's at Drake on University Avenue on Aug. 19, 2022.

Grimes' death was recorded as Des Moines' 12th homicide of 2022.

Harris initially claimed the shooting was in self-defense.
