Atlantic police: Juvenile charged after posting threat on social media

Atlantic police said the threat was directed towards two school district buildings.

ATLANTIC, Iowa — A 12-year-old is in custody after allegedly posting a threat to two Atlantic school district buildings on social media, police said in a press release

Atlantic police received a report of a threat naming two district buildings on Sunday. Police investigated the threat and determined it was not credible, allowing students and staff to attend school as usual on Monday. 

Police have charged a 12-year-old with Threats of Terrorism and False Reports to or Communications with Public Safety Entities "due to the seriousness of the threat and the disruption to the school and learning environment," the department added. 

The child was transported to a juvenile detention center. 

Police will have a "heightened presence" at Atlantic Community School District buildings this week.
