DES MOINES, Iowa — A 32-year-old Des Moines man is under arrest after stealing a car with a baby in the back seat on Friday morning, according to a police update.
Police say they located and arrested the suspect, Corey Van Le, at an apartment on the 2700 block of Ingersoll Avenue using witness and video evidence.
Le faces:
- Neglect Of A Dependent (Class C Felony)
- Operating A Motor Vehicle Without Owners Consent (Aggravated Misdemeanor)
The car, a 2015 Mercedes-Benz GL-350 SUV, was stolen at approximately 11 a.m. in the 2300 block of Ingersoll Avenue.
The 9-month-old was in the back seat of the vehicle, secured in a car seat. Police believe the suspect was attempting to steal the car and the baby just happened to be inside.
Police deployed "all available officers" to address the situation and Iowa State Patrol provided air support. Law enforcement tracked a cell phone left in the stolen vehicle to find the car.
The car was located at around noon in the parking lot in front of Office Max on Ingersoll. The baby is "healthy and well" and has since been reunited with their family, police said on X.
