11-year-old arrested over Centerville school threat, police say

The juvenile has been charged with Threat of Terrorism, a Class D Felony.

CENTERVILLE, Iowa — Just over a week after a 17-year old was charged with Threat of Terrorism against Centerville High School,  an 11-year-old was taken into custody following threats of school violence that were reported to police by the principal of Howar Middle School.

The Centerville Police Department said it was notified of the situation around 1 p.m. Friday and at 2:24 p.m., the suspect was arrested and charged with Threat of Terrorism at the Appanoose County Law Center.

The police department credits multiple students in their notifying staff of threats, but said it was determined there were no immediate risks to staff and students.

"It is imperative that parents and guardians speak with their children about the serious nature of threats of violence," the department said in a release. "The Police Department and School District take all threats seriously and will pursue charges when warranted. Our schools are intended to be a safe place for our children to learn and threats of violence will not be tolerated."
