DES MOINES, Iowa — The FBI San Antonio Division is investigating after a Des Moines woman was reported missing in Mexico.
51-year-old Chris Leguisano was reported missing by her family on Aug. 10. Her family says her last known location was Reynosa, Tamaulipas, just south of the U.S.-Mexico border.
"Kidnappers have specifically targeted passengers with connections to the United States, including U.S. citizens and residents," the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Mexico said of the region.
Local 5 spoke with Chris's son, Edgar Chong Leguisano, who said he and his family have felt hopeless after his mother's disappearance.
On Aug. 8, Chris drove from Des Moines to San Antonio to stay with Edgar. The next day, she traveled to Mexico to take a truck to her ex-brother-in-law.
“After they made the transaction of giving over the truck, he confirms that she was again distressed and was very impatient as she seemed to rush to get back to the border and to get out of that area," Edgar said.
Edgar said Chris planned on getting a rental car after dropping off the truck. She planned on driving the rental back to San Antonio, where she would catch a flight back to Des Moines.
On Aug. 10, Edgar reported his mom missing to the FBI office in McAllen, Texas. Edgar said the FBI is now working with Mexican authorities on the case.
“I'm starting to feel numb," Edgar said. "I'm starting to feel hopeless and empty, but I'm trying to keep my faith strong, because I know my mom is praying every day to get out of where she's at.”
Over the last few weeks, Edgar said he has received messages asking for money in exchange for information on his mother's whereabouts.
“I have to play the waiting game and I have to deal with all these ransom messages and threatening messages from random and anonymous people," Edgar said.
Despite it all, Edgar remains hopeful his mom will come home safe.
“Mom, I want you to know that I love you with all my heart and that I'm not going to stop until I find you," he said.
