DAVENPORT, Iowa — Two Davenport West High School students were arrested Wednesday morning at the school after police found guns inside each of their backpacks.
Just after 9 a.m., police arrived at the school to serve search warrants on the two students. Police said the two students were called out of their classroom to meet with officials. This is when police say they found firearms inside each of their backpacks.
The two students, a 17-year-old and a 15-year-old, were arrested and charged as follows.
- 17-year-old
- Carrying weapons on school grounds
- 15-year-old
- Carrying weapons on school grounds, dominion/control of firearm/offensive weapon by felon, interference with official acts - firearm
The school did not close as a result of the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
The Davenport Community School District released the following statement:
The safety of our students and staff, and the security of our buildings, remains a top priority for the Davenport Community School District. DCSD leadership and West administration coordinated closely with the Davenport Police Department to ensure that the execution of this search warrant was done in private, away from other students. It did not cause further incident or disruption to the school day.
The District values our ongoing partnership with the Davenport Police Department. We are currently coordinating with DPD and our school resource officers on implementing enhanced security protocols in our buildings over the coming days to ensure the safety of our students and staff.
