DMPD: Des Moines man facing multiple felonies after shooting at a police officer

The suspect allegedly fired multiple shots at an officer during an on-foot pursuit. The officer was not injured in the shooting.

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines man faces multiple felony charges after shooting at a police officer Sunday night, Des Moines police said in a press release.

A Des Moines Police Department patrol officer attempted to make a traffic stop near the intersection of Southwest 9th Street and McKinley Avenue around 11 p.m. Sunday. Police claim the driver of the car, 27-year-old Cody Gibbs of Des Moines, refused to stop and continued driving away from the officer.

While attempting to flee, Gibbs' car left the road at Southwest 9th Street and Payton Avenue and "became disabled", police said. Gibbs got out of the car and ran from the scene.

Gibbs allegedly fired multiple shots at the officer during the pursuit. However, the officer was not injured.

Police took Gibbs into custody shortly after the pursuit began. A handgun was found at the scene.

Gibbs is currently being held in Polk County Jail. He is charged with multiple traffic-related violations, in addition to the following charges:

  • Assault on a Police Officer with a Dangerous Weapon
  • Felon In Possession of a Firearm
  • Reckless Use of a Firearm
