Armed suspect dead after shooting incident in downtown Des Moines, police say

The two primary responding officers will be placed on administrative assignment.

DES MOINES, Iowa — An armed suspect is dead following a shooting incident involving an officer in downtown Des Moines Tuesday morning.

Police responded to a report of a man threatening a woman with a gun on Grand Avenue just before 6:10 a.m.

Officers arrived at the scene and reported "shots had been fired" at approximately 6:12 a.m., police said in a press release.

Des Moines Fire Department rescue personnel pronounced the suspect dead at the scene. No officers were injured in the incident.

A pistol was recovered after the shooting. The two primary responding officers will be placed on administrative assignment.

"It's certainly nothing that we will ever want to happen," Des Moines Police Sgt. Paul Parizek told Local 5. "You know, this use of deadly force is reserved for those situations when somebody themselves is either being threatened for serious injury or death. And you know, our actions are typically a reaction to that, and it's certainly unfortunate."

Roads at 5th Avenue and Grand Avenue are temporarily closed while the investigation continues.
