Suspects arrested in December 2022 homicide, Des Moines police say

More than a year after 35-year-old Tyrone Livon Hutchins was shot and killed, the suspects in his death were located in Las Vegas, Nev.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines police have arrested two brothers in connection to a December 2022 homicide in the Drake Neighborhood.

35-year-old Tyrone Livon Hutchins was found with a gunshot wound outside of Rico's bar just before 6 p.m. on Dec. 10, 2022. More than a year later, the suspects for the city's 17th homicide of 2022 were located in Las Vegas, Nev.

Police claim evidence shows that 35-year-old James Mikale Wiggins and 38-year-old Marcell Navell Wiggins went to Rico's to "confront" Hutchins that night.

Marcell and a third person approached Hutchins. When Hutchins tried to leave the bar, James allegedly shot him. Police provided no further details about this third individual.

Hutchins died after being taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

It's unclear what the confrontation was about, but Local 5 is working to access court documents for more information.

James faces one charge of Murder in the First Degree, which carries a minimum sentence of life in prison if convicted, while Marcell is charged with Going Armed With Intent and Felon In Possession of a Firearm.

Marcell returned to Des Moines in early January and has since been released from the Polk County Jail. James was arrested on Feb. 2, and law enforcement is working to get him extradited to Polk County.
