Man killed 1, then himself in NE 17th Street shooting, Polk County Sheriff's Office says

The public was asked to avoid NE 17th Street between NE 51st Avenue and NE 53rd Avenue during the investigation, but the street has since reopened.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Two people are dead after a shooting north of Des Moines Friday morning, the Polk County Sheriff's Office confirmed.

The sheriff's office got a call of a shooting in the 5100 block of NE 17th Street around 6:45 a.m. Friday.

According to preliminary investigation, witness statements and video evidence, one of the men shot the other and then himself. Both men died on the scene, PCSO said.

Officials believe this shooting was "an isolated incident between the two males."

The public was asked to avoid NE 17th Street between NE 51st Avenue and NE 53rd Avenue during the investigation, but the street has since reopened.

"We don't believe that there's any threat to the public at this time," Capt. Ryan Evans with the sheriff's office said late Friday morning.

The names of the two deceased men have not yet been released, pending family notification.
