Des Moines man convicted of first-degree murder in 2022 shooting

The Polk County Attorney's Office said Andrew Harris and 39-year-old Tyrell Grimes got into an argument outside of Rico's at Drake on University Avenue.

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines man faces life in prison after a jury convicted him of first-degree murder in a 2022 shooting in the Drake neighborhood.

The Polk County Attorney's Office said Andrew Harris and 39-year-old Tyrell Grimes got into an argument outside of Rico's at Drake on University Avenue on Aug. 19, 2022.

Harris left the scene in a car and then returned less than 10 minutes later, shooting Grimes twice. Grimes was transported to MercyOne by responding crews, where he later died.

Though Harris initially claimed he was not at the scene of the shooting, he later told police the shooting was in self-defense because "he believe Grimes posed a threat to him."

The shooting was Des Moines' 12th homicide in 2022.

Harris' sentencing is set for Wednesday, Dec. 13.
