Des Moines man charged after police say he stabbed homeless man

A 28-year-old Des Moines man allegedly stabbed the victim with a knife taped to a BB gun, believing the victim to be someone else.

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing a homeless man.

According to a criminal complaint, the 28-year-old suspect had planned to intentionally murder someone, but the victim was not the intended target. The man identified his intended target as "Colton."

While using a BB gun with a throwing knife duct taped to the front of it, he stabbed the victim in the back, believing it to be his original target, court documents state.

The man allegedly said he had been planning the attack for weeks, and that he had a list of people he would be "willing to do life in prison for." After coaxing the victim out of his tent, he stabbed him.

Once the suspect realized the man was not "Colton," he quickly fled in his parents car that he had brought to the scene.

Police later found him with his weapon also being found in the trunk of the car. He was then arrested and charged with the Class B felony. His bond was set at $500,000 cash only.

According to the man, "Colton" had hurt a friend of his and used this as his justification for murder.

The victim was hospitalized with serious injuries.
