DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines police have arrested a suspect in connection to a fatal shooting from early April.
31-year-old Joshua Ryan Carmody faces the following charges:
- Murder in the First Degree
- Burglary in the First Degree
Carmody is accused of fatally shooting 30-year-old Sayvon Propps on April 10.
Police believe Carmody forced his way into Propps' hotel room. When Propps fired his gun in self-defense, police say Carmody fired back, killing Propps.
Propps' death marked Des Moines' second homicide of 2024.
In addition to the shooting on April 10, Carmody is also charged with Interference With Official Acts in connection to a separate shooting.
Police responded to reports of shots fired near Fleur Drive and McKinley Avenue on March 11. When officers arrived, they located a potential suspect and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.
The driver, who was later identified as Carmody, fled from the traffic stop. Carmody eventually abandoned the car on Park Avenue before running away on food. Officers say they heard "a sound consistent with a gunshot" as Carmody ran away.
Carmody is currently being held at the Polk County Jail.
